Unlocking the Power of Singles: Essential Tips for Indie Artists and Labels

Here’s your step-by-step guide to releasing a new single…

In today's music market, the debate between singles and albums remains ever relevant. While albums offer a comprehensive journey through an artist's vision, singles hold a crucial place in music discovery and experimentation.

Singles provide artists with an opportunity to explore new creative avenues without the pressure of a full album release. Each single represents a chance to attract new fans, appease algorithms, and refine marketing strategies.

5 Weeks from Release Day

Select a release date that allows for at least 4 weeks of lead time before uploading the song.

This timeframe ensures ample time for mastering, finalizing artwork, and collecting metadata such as lyrics and credits.

4 Weeks from Release Day

Upload your song to your chosen digital distributor. This step allows for a thorough review to ensure accuracy and completeness.

4 Weeks from Release Day

Complete all metadata requirements, including lyrics, high-resolution press photos, updated bios, and any accompanying videos or motion graphics.

It might be a good idea to also store these assets in a shared folder using Google Drive, Dropbox, or a tool like Highnote.

3 Weeks from Release Day

Fill out forms in the artist portals of major digital service providers (DSPs) like Amazon, Tidal, and Spotify.

Talk to your digital distributor about what promotional tools they can offer you (this can be done a little earlier as well).

2 Weeks from Release Day

Begin teasing the release on social media by sharing snippets of the track or creating short loops of catchy sections, like the chorus, to generate excitement.

1 Week from Release Day

Generate smart links and presaves using platforms like Hypeddit or tools provided by your distributor. Presaves are increasingly important and now native to platforms like Apple and Spotify.

1 Day Before Release Day

Send reminders to your audience to anticipate the release and be on the lookout for the new track.

On Release Day

Utilize every available platform and communication channel to announce the release, including social media, email newsletters, personal outreach, and promotional materials.

1 Day After Release Day

Pitch your music to user-generated playlists using tools like Groover to streamline the process and maximize exposure.

A Few Days After Release Day

Pitch your music to Pandora using the Artist Marketing Platform (AMP) and maintain a record of your pitching efforts for future reference.

A Week After Release Day

Continue to selectively pitch your single to relevant curators and blogs, maintaining a database of contacts and responses.

2 Weeks After Release Day

Keep the momentum going by promoting the song through behind-the-scenes content, audio commentaries, or bonus releases for dedicated fans on platforms like Bandcamp.

I was just about to release a new standalone single…

And I needed some help…

So I called up my friend Mike Warner, an expert in all things digital streaming, playlists, and the author of the best-selling book, Work Hard Playlist Hard.

I asked him to walk me through the process of successfully releasing a single from when the song is mastered, all the way up to release day!
