The 5 Social Media

Roadblocks

Problems and solutions for indie record label owners

Running a record label is already a massive job—social media shouldn't feel like another full-time gig.

In this article, we’re tackling the five most common social media roadblocks indie label owners face.

You'll also learn a simple, repeatable system for overcoming each one—so you can stay visible and build real connections with your audience.

Roadblock 1: “I Don’t Know What to Post”

You sit down to post… and nothing comes to mind. What do people even want to see from a label?

My Fix: Use Content Buckets – Choose 3–5 go-to themes/post-types to post regularly.
Examples: Artist Spotlights, Behind-the-Scenes, Merch Releases, Studio Moments, Label News

Your Turn:
List your 3–5 content buckets that contain unique types of content you can do each week.

Example: Monday: Inspirational Quote. Tuesday: Behind the Scenes Video. Wednesday: Promote a Backcatalog Release

Roadblock 2:
“I Don’t Know How to Create Content Consistently”

Creating social content can feel like it takes forever—especially when you're not sure what you're doing.

My Fix: Use Templates + Batch Work – Pick one day a month (or a few days to create 6 months of content) to create and repurpose content.

Your Turn:

  • Plan your day of content creation?

  • Record 20+ short direct-to-camera videos in one sitting.

  • Create backcatalog ads, quotes, using the same template.

Roadblock 3:
“I Don’t Know How to Post Content Consistently”

Maybe you have content… but remembering to post it is another story.

My Fix: Schedule Ahead – Use tools like Meta’s Business Suite to pre-schedule a week or month of posts at a time.

Your Turn:

  • Create a online folder that contains all of your created and edited social media posts

  • Use Google Sheets to organize each post, caption (use AI to write these) and include a column to indicate if you’ve already posted it

  • Make your future work easier when creating the content by tagging, sorting, etc.

Roadblock 4: “I Don’t Know Which Platforms to Focus On”

Trying to be everywhere at once is exhausting—but not if you make it easy for yourself.

My Fix: Create Universal Content – Focus on creating content that can easily be repurposed across tons of platforms, making posting and reposting super easy!

Your Turn:

  • Which platforms make the most sense for your label right now and where your audience is currently most active?

  • What platforms will allow you to cross post the same content (eg. the same vertical video can be posted on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts, etc).

Roadblock 5: “I Don’t Know If Any of It Matters”

When you’re not seeing results, it’s hard to stay motivated.

My Fix: Track What Matters – Instead of chasing likes, track engagement, growth, and clicks to your store or artist pages. Just. Keep. Showing. Up.

Your Turn:

  • What 2–3 metrics will you track each month to measure your progress?

  • Alternatively, commit a few days to creating pre-made content that allows you to post at least 3 pieces of content each week. Just post regularly, and ignore the analytics.

  • A brand’s social media presence is like their storefront. It’s most important to look open, active, and approachable to your customers.

You don’t need to go viral to make social media work for your label. What you do need is a system—something that keeps you consistent and connected to your community.

Focus on what matters, show up regularly, and let your label’s identity come through in everything you share.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a record label post on social media?

A record label can post a variety of content to stay active and connect with fans. Some examples include artist announcements, album release dates, new merch drops, behind-the-scenes studio footage, interviews, throwback posts, curated playlists, and even fan-generated content. The key is to choose content pillars that represent your label’s brand and stay consistent.

How often should a record label post on social media?

Ideally, indie record labels should aim to post 3–5 times per week on their main platform. Consistency is more important than frequency, so it’s better to commit to a sustainable posting rhythm that you can stick to—whether that’s once a day or three times a week.

Which social media platforms are best for indie record labels?

Instagram and TikTok are two of the most effective platforms for indie record labels right now. Instagram is great for visual storytelling, artist promotion, and direct fan engagement. TikTok offers the chance for music discovery and viral reach. Depending on your audience, you might also consider YouTube, X (Twitter), or Facebook for specific campaigns.

How can an indie label grow their audience on social media?

Growing your social media audience starts with consistent, valuable content. Use engaging visuals, show the human side of your label, and promote your artists in creative ways. Hashtags, collaborations, tagging artists and fans, and cross-promoting on multiple platforms can also help grow your reach organically over time.

Is it worth it for a small record label to focus on social media?

Yes—social media is one of the most accessible and cost-effective tools for building brand awareness, reaching new listeners, and creating a community around your label. You don’t need to go viral to benefit. A consistent, authentic presence can strengthen relationships with your current audience and attract new fans and collaborators.
