1. Research

Start your journey by diving deep into the music landscape. Spend time visiting local record stores, listening to various podcasts, and immersing yourself in the work of existing record labels.

This hands-on research will provide you with insights into how other labels operate and help you discover what sets them apart. Additionally, consider ordering music from different labels to experience their packaging and customer service firsthand.

2. Identify

To stand out in the competitive music industry, you need to identify your label's unique selling points, your unfair advantage, and your core "why." What will make your label distinct from others? Is it your commitment to a specific genre, your personalized approach to artist development, or your emphasis on community engagement?

Define these aspects clearly as they will shape your label's identity and resonate with potential artists and fans.

3. Plan

Plan your label launch meticulously. Set a clear launch date and work backward to create a comprehensive schedule that covers all necessary tasks.

Your plan should extend far into the future to ensure that you have a roadmap for growth beyond the initial stages. Include considerations for budgeting, marketing strategies, and artist signings in your plan.

4. Brand

Your label's brand is crucial for making a lasting impression. Choose a name that encapsulates your vision and values. Once you've settled on a name, secure relevant domain names and social media handles.

Test and refine a logo that represents your brand's essence, as visual identity plays a significant role in attracting artists and fans. Start thinking about great visuals aesthetics and album covers that you like!

5. Engage

Identify artists or bands that align with your label's vision. Seek out musicians who share your passion and are receptive to your approach. Schedule meetings to discuss your plans and vision, and share your workback schedule to showcase your commitment.

Secure the commitment from artists who resonate with your label's ethos. Make sure you are all on the same page with making this label and their release a reality!

6. Create

Let’s start making this feel real! Collaborate with your signed artists to create exceptional music. Obtain the masters and initiate the process of producing a high-quality record.

Simultaneously, upload your releases to a digital distributor and select a strategic release date. Consider offering physical formats such as tapes, CDs, and vinyl, along with merchandise that fans can connect with.

7. Launch

Launch your label with a bang! Host a launch party that showcases your label's personality and values. Consider synchronizing the launch with your first release or in close proximity.

Develop a sustainable release schedule to help fans understand your label's ethos and anticipate future releases. Consistency will build credibility and trust among your audience.

Getting Started FAQs

How much does it cost to start a record label?

I suppose it’s possible to say that it can cost “nothing” but that would probably limit your marketing abilities and your distribution reach. A digital-only label releasing exclusively on Bandcamp can start a label for almost zero dollars assuming you have a logo. On the other end of the spectrum, if you had an endless budget you could give your artist a $10,000 advance, register your trademark for $2000, hire a music attorney for $1000 to draw up a contract, press a vinyl run of 300 records for $2500, and hire a publicist for another $2500. Somewhere in between is entirely up to you and your available budget.

How much does a label take from the artist?

Major labels have been known to take upwards of 90% of net sales. Mid-size independents royalty rates average between 50-75%. The most common royalty share amongst small indie labels is 50/50. You can even offer a more lopsided royalty in favor of your artist, something like 35% for the label and 65% for the artist. Check this out for some help with managing your record label’s royalties…

Can you recommend a lawyer, publicist, manufacturer, etc?

I often get asked about where to find vendors or reputable industry service providers. The best thing you can do is ask people you trust in the industry who they have used in the past. You can also find companies who have been previously hired by artists/labels you admire.

How do I get my music on Spotify, AppleMusic, etc?

At the time of writing this, there isn’t any way to upload directly to one of these services. Instead, you have to use an aggregator like CDBaby, DistroKid, Ditto, Tunecore, etc. There are plenty of blogs online that will break down the pros and cons of those services. You can expect to pay a one-time fee per album/single or an annual fee to keep your music up online. The good thing about these services is that they will upload to all of the many DSPs (Digital Service Providers) across the globe, including any future DSPs that come to market.
