How to Avoid Burnout
Normally, at the end of the year (or anytime of year, for that matter), I start to feel burned out from running my record label…
Stress and pressure can build up from things like production delays, touring uncertainties, customer demands, and artist’s expectations.
I want to share with you a few things that you can do to mitigate any potential burnout you might feel running your record label.
1. Practice saying “No.”
Try declining a new opportunity at least once a month or completely eliminate a part of your job that causes stress. Before you do, give your artists and your team a heads up that you’ll be intentionally saying “no” more often.
2. Plan out your year all at once.
During a down time like December (or in the summer), set aside a day to plan out what you hope to do in the coming year. Assign a promotional theme to each month (e.g. A new album release in March, Black Friday campaign in November). Knowing what you should be doing each month will help temper the anxiety of what’s coming next. Think of it as a to-do list for the entire year.
3. Go on hiatus.
There are a few different ways that you put your label on hiatus…
a) Indefinite hiatus - Closing up shop with no return date in mind.
b) Temporary hiatus - Shutting down your label operations for a set amount of time (ie. six months, one year).
c) Selective hiatus - Shutting down certain aspects of your label (e.g. not releasing physical product for an entire year).
Don’t forget to make the hiatus official. Post it on your website and on social media. Be honest and upfront about your sabbatical, your audience and artists will appreciate and respect you more.
I think there are healthy ways for us to avoid burning out.
Don’t be afraid to start saying “No” more often, or stepping away all together for as long as you need.
